the brain

The history of our evolution can be seen in the way the brain is constructed. The brain is a highly complex organ which forms part of the sensory system, among other things. It weighs some 1300 grams and contains billions of brain cells (neurons).

These neurons are linked to each other by trillions of connections, which allow them to communicate. In the course of our evolution, increasingly sophisticated structures have been laid down on top of one other. This mass of structures is covered by the cerebral cortex. The classification of sections of the cerebral cortex reflects our abilities. These include memory, sensory perception and conscious decision-making.
